Imagining someone’s life in the future

A reminder just appeared on my iPad, today is my grandson’s birthday. I decided to give him a party at home. Everyone is invited to the party. I do not know why we keep celebrating birthdays these days, maybe it is an old custom we cannot leave behind. While I check the list of the things I need for the party, I set my robot maid to do all the decorations; I have never been good at decorating, so it is good having all these devices that make our life easier.

It is the year of 2175 and things have changed. Now cars fly and taking a trip to the moon it is something common and sometimes boring. We built a world above the clouds because the surface is so polluted that only cockroaches can live there. Kids do not attend to school anymore, they have chips inserted with all the subjects and when they sleep, their brain downloads all the information and transforms it into knowledge. Nowadays kids think they are smarter than us, they feel like little Einsteins, but I think it is not fair to compare the way they learn with the old days when we attend to school every day.

I got to the mall and I saw a lot of young men wearing coats with neon lights on the sides, thus I decided to buy one for my grandson as a gift. I bought some food pills, I have never been good at cooking either, all you have to do is pour some water onto the pills, put them inside the microwave, set the time and wait for them to be ready. While I was in the grocery store, I saw one of my ex-wives with her new husband who is, by the way, 50 years younger than her. I have been married five times, she was my third wife. I greeted her and told her that I am having a party tonight. She did not waste the moment to throw one of her sarcastic comments about how old I am and that I should not be having parties because, according to her, that is something only young people do. I did not pay attention to her comment and invited her to the party. I was just being polite, deep inside my heart I hope she does not show up there.  After all I do not feel old; I try to keep myself as active as possible. My friends often told me that I am as vigorous as a horse and that my mind is as silly and naive as a little kid. I take that as a compliment.

Back home everything seems to be ready, loud music playing, electronic balloons dancing and all the decorations looking great. My robot maid did a great job. The party is about to start and the guests are about to arrive. I hope my grandson likes this party, he is 100-year-old today, a great age to celebrate. Another reminder on my iPad, “Your birthday” it says. I wonder if someone will throw a party for my birthday as well, anyway, one does not turn 400 years very often.
